SARASOTA, Fla. – (Sept. 17, 2002) – NextBend, Inc. has been granted exclusive licensing rights to three patents on a new class of modular devices that provide the functionality of a computer without the complexity, as well as access to broadband and communications services.
Patents 5,909,357, 6,073,333, and 6,346,000 are held by Tom Orr, NextBend’s founder, president and CEO, who has granted the Company exclusive rights to license the technology to manufacturers interested in developing the systems, dubbed Stackable Decks™.
Modular systems are not new. However, the technology patented by Orr addresses many of the basic problems that plagued previous designs. Unlike its predecessors, the Stackable Deck technology enables the use of independent Decks without requiring shared resources. It also resolves compatibility issues because the shape of the Deck indicates compatibility with other Decks. Further, an entire system can run from a single power supply and be cooled by a single fan.
“An alternative to the traditional personal computer, our patented technology can create a network of dedicated Decks that work together like a component home entertainment system,” says Orr. “They allow consumers to start with what they need right now, such as broadband Internet access, email and applications, then add functions and resources like data storage, DVD, etc. as their needs change. Best of all, dedicated Stackable Decks will be significantly faster and more reliable than personal computers and other consumer electronics products, and will require far less technical support.”
Adds NextBend CTO Mark Hewitt: “Expanding a system based on the Stackable Deck technology is also simple. Connections are made automatically when the Deck is physically connected to the existing stack. And, because each Deck has its own hardware and software resources, its application is automatically available to the entire system.”
In addition to securing licensing rights the three patents, NextBend has developed non-working prototype Stackable Decks for demonstration purposes, and has built a coalition of companies capable of providing the infrastructure necessary to create an end-to-end modular solution based on the Stackable Deck technology.
“NextBend’s primary goal right now is to develop relationships with companies that share our vision,” says Orr. “At the same time, we intend to continue investing in research that focuses on the present and future needs of the end users of our technology to find ways to make technology easier to use, and more reliable, available and accessible.”
