Digital Divide Council Continues To Make Strides
~~Florida’s Initiative to Bridge the Digital Divide~~

TALLAHASSEE— The Digital Divide Council met on Monday, September 16, 2002 to continue efforts to bridge the digital divide. The Council was revamped with the election of a new chair and co-chair for the 2002-2004 term as well as the appointments of 4 new Council members

Members elected John Ford as Chair of the Council, and Suzanne Martin to serve as Vice-Chair.

New appointments were made to the Council for the term starting July 1, 2002, ending June 30, 2004. The Speaker of the House appointed Representative David Mealor and Dr. Joel Hartman to the Council. The President of the Senate appointed Senator Victor Crist and Mr. Keith Dubose to the Council.

Members of the Digital Divide Council include:

Kimberly Bahrami, CIO for the State Technology Office
Pamella Dana, Director of OTTED
Curtis Austin, President of Workforce Florida Inc.
Suzanne Martin, Agency of Workforce Innovation
Benjamin Finzi, Chair of the privatized ITFlorida.com, Inc.
Charlie Crist, Commissioner of Education
David Armstrong, Chancellor of the Florida Community College System
Loretta Costin, Executive Director of the State Board of Career Education
Manuel Medina, Chair of the Network Access Point of the Americas
Dr. Joel Hartman, (a representative of the IT industry in Florida appointed by the Speaker of the House of Representatives)
Mr. Keith Dubose, (a representative of the IT industry in Florida appointed by the President of the Senate)
Rep. David Mealor, Republican member of the House of Representatives (ex officio, nonvoting member)
Rep. Ed Jennings, Democratic member of the House of Representatives (ex officio, nonvoting member)
Sen. Victor Crist, Republican member of the Senate (ex officio, nonvoting member)
Sen. Ron Klein, Democratic member of the Senate (ex officio, nonvoting member)

The Council voted on procedures for the request of applications from the Regional Workforce Boards in the six designated pilot areas. The meeting also included presentations from Comcast Cable on the formation of a High Speed Internet Partnership, the Internet Coast Digital Divide, and Florida’s PowerUp.

The Digital Divide Council was established through Senate Bill 1672 in July of 2001. The purpose of the Council is to promote that all Floridians have reasonable opportunities to access and training needed to develop the knowledge and skills required to use Information Technology to enhance their quality of life.
