Select Organizations Nationwide Receive Renewed Agency Support
Boca Raton, FL – October 17, 2002 - The Enterprise Development Corporation (EDC), a public/private partnership specializing in providing strategic business development services to emerging science and technology companies, announced today that funding of the STAR BusinessLINC mentor/protégé program will continue for a second year. The US Small Business Administration (SBA), selected EDC for renewed funding because of its success with the BusinessLINC program across South Florida, and its compliance with BusinessLINC objectives as outlined in the original grant award.
“Funding for BusinessLINC was originally expected to be a one-year opportunity,” stated Lori Metcalf, EDC Director of Operations and BusinessLINC program administrator. “This important program has given entrepreneurs access to local business leaders for advice on everything from legal issues to business development to strategic planning, and we are honored to be able to continue offering it to South Florida’s emerging technology community.”
The program, introduced in November 2001, focuses on creating business-to-business linkages that have a good chance of enduring beyond the initial 15-hour commitment as outlined in the grant. To date, leading firms such as Akerman Senterfitt, Champion Solutions Group, Ernst & Young, KPMG, and Prudential Financial have enrolled as mentors, while young protégé companies include Powers of 5, Dealerstore, MyDotManager, Enflyer and AI Developers, to name a few.
“Mentoring is such an important aspect of personal and professional development, and provides an excellent vehicle for learning from the successes and failures of others,” stated Jane Teague, EDC Executive Director. “Anyone involved in the emerging tech sector knows how difficult this year has been, and BusinessLINC provides young companies with the support they need at a time when they need it the most.”
The STAR BusinessLINC Coalition’s mission is to facilitate the creation and growth of science and technology small businesses in South Florida through the following initiatives:
· Expanding business-to-business relationships between large and small business; · Providing “successful business owners” and skilled government mentoring to small businesses; · Providing businesses with online business development information to include a database of companies that are interested in mentor-protégé programs, and in community based local or statewide business development programs.
