The Space Engineering Institute, Inc. a not-for-profit [501(c)3 pending] foundation established to promote advanced space technology research in east Central Florida, has implemented a project to establish the Spacecoast Plasma/High-energy Electrostatics Research & Engineering Laboratory ("SphereLab") in the vicinity of Kennedy Space Center.
SphereLab will pursue plasma and combustion dynamics research on behalf of government and industry clients, establishing the first plasma research facility in the state of Florida. Specific instrumentation to be acquired by SphereLab would make the facility one of only three in the United States, and one of only five in the world, with similar plasma research capabilities.
As the state's first applied plasma research program, SphereLab will investigate topics of interest to Florida manufacturers, including aerospace power and propulsion technology development.
Dr. Edwin F. Strother, Executive Director of SphereLab is a past Chairman of the Canaveral Council of Technical Societies, and of the local [Brevard] section of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA). He is also a past President of the Florida Academy of Sciences.
Dr. David E. Flinchbaugh, P.E., Chief Scientist for SphereLab is a past Chairman of the Florida Council of Engineering Societies, and of the local [Orlando] section of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers. Dr. Flinchbaugh is the inventor of the Cesium Ion Vapor Laser, the first Argon Ion Laser for industrial/medical applications, and the first radiation hardened remote manipulator arm for nuclear reactor maintenance. He is the recipient of the Governor's New Product Award citation for 2002, as the top inventor in the state.
It is anticipated that a substantial volume of corporate research investment will channel through SphereLab into Graduate Research Fellowships among promising Florida students in science and engineering, who seek to pursue projects of interest to SEI, and its sponsors.
The Space Engineering Institute, Inc. is seeking high tech companies in Florida with industrial plasma requirements to team with for federal research grant proposals, under the currently extant U.S. Department of Defense and U.S. Department of Energy Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) Grant program solicitations.
Indications of interest may be addressed to SphereLab in care of Dr. Edwin F. Strother, Executive Director, at spherelab@spacemail.com
