PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla., November 18, 2002 - Union Bank of California, N.A. will use Live Scan fingerprint technology systems from Cross Match Technologies as part of the Bank¡¦s pre-employment screening processes to help reduce fraud.
¡§We are one of the first banks to begin to do FBI background checks as part of the pre-employment screening process,¡¨ said Mark Schmidt, Union Bank¡¦s senior vice president of human resources. ¡§As a Federal contractor, we are required by federal law to verify that our employees have not been convicted of any crime involving breaches of trust or dishonest acts, so we routinely conduct background checks. We¡¦ve heard of instances where crime rings will seek to place one of their members in a bank on a temporary basis knowing that the traditional background checks will take some time, giving them a short period in which to conduct fraud. The Cross Match Live Scan system, with its rapid turnaround capability, eliminates that opportunity,¡¨ he said.
Union Bank will be using Cross Match Technologies¡¦ global industry-leading ID 1000„µ Live Scan identification system that replaces traditional ink-on-paper fingerprints by electronically scanning the prints of a person¡¦s 10 fingers. The biometric system then allows for the prints in digital format to be rapidly transmitted to the American Bankers Association (ABA), which then electronically forwards the fingerprints to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for rapid screening through the agency¡¦s national database.
¡§The use of Live Scan will dramatically speed up our FBI background checking process,¡¨ said Schmidt. The Bank, third largest in California, can now expect to get results back within five to seven working days; the ink-on-paper process takes three to six weeks and much longer if prints are faulty. Live Scan technology enables fingerprint technicians to immediately determine if the prints are of optimal quality. The Bank will use the fingerprint scanning systems at each of its staffing centers. ¡§We also will put the system, which is compact and very mobile, on the road with our recruiters as they attend various job fairs and campus recruitment events,¡¨ Schmidt said.
¡§Once again, Cross Match¡¦s sterling capabilities of quality, mobility and the enabling of rapid turnaround in the background checking process have demonstrated the value of our products for the financial services community,¡¨ said Theodore ¡§Ted¡¨ Johnson, chairman and CEO of Cross Match.
