FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
AXIMETRIC JOINS HANDS WITH CORNELL THEORY CENTER AND MICROSOFT TO DESIGN FUTURE GENERATION SCALABLE COMPUTING
Using .NET to achieve high efficiency in portable parallel computing.
November 18, 2002, ORLANDO – Aximetric Inc. announced today that it has been awarded a Phase I DARPA Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) contract , to develop a portable, scalable parallel computing model for complex decision systems. The Florida-based technology company will collaborate with the Cornell Theory Center (CTC), Cornell University’s high-performance computing and technology research center, to implement the Java-based Bulk Synchronous Parallel System (JBSP) using Microsoft’s .NET architecture on CTC’s Windows-based high-performance computing resources.
Although parallel computing is widely used in defense and non-defense research applications, parallel solutions still tend to be highly customized and not easily portable across platforms, which is a bottleneck to the rapid processing, analyzing, and sharing of intelligence data. The volume of incoming data requires an integrated database where relevant data have been fused by smart filters. Presenting this fused data in a way that facilitates human decision-making is an inherently scalable, parallel computing application.
By focusing on industry-standard, general purpose technologies, Aximetric will develop broadly useful tools. “This research will reduce the gap between special-purpose and mainstream computing,” said Dr. Guru Prasad, president of Aximetric. “We are excited to leverage the existing Windows and .NET expertise at CTC.”
The Bulk Synchronous Parallel (BSP) model is a very portable model that uses simple programming parameters for building the parallel programming model. These models can be built on uni-processor machines and be easily transferred to parallel/distributed processors using the BSP library for those platforms. The “compile once, run anywhere” concept of Java, partnered with the BSP parallel model and the .NET architecture developed by Microsoft, form the crux of our approach towards portability and scalability using low cost Windows-based workstations.
“Because .Net Web Services are based on open industry standards they will provide an ideal distributed computing platform for BSP moving forward,” states David Lifka, Chief Technical Officer and Director of CTC. “This research will allow us to really push the envelope with .Net.”
