DataGlyphics Helps The Poynter Institute Help Journalists - DataGlyphics and Poynter redevelop, re-launch www.poynter.org -
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – DataGlyphics Inc. has completed a sweeping redevelopment of the Web site produced by The Poynter Institute, the non-profit school for journalists based in St. Petersburg.
The overhaul of the Poynter site enables the school's small team of editors to manage a big site that gets bigger every day. The site (Poynter Online at http://www.poynter.org) provides journalists around the world with advice, information and other material helpful in their day-to-day work.
"With more than 11,000 pages and growing every day, we desperately needed a database-driven site that we could edit and maintain more efficiently," said Bill Mitchell, online editor and marketing director at Poynter. "DataGlyphics has built us a Web-based content management system that lets us move quickly (with just a single click) from the public view of any article or page to the editing interface for the same page or article."
William H. Stover, Jr., CEO of DataGlyphics, said, "Content is truly king at Poynter Online. Now, Poynter personnel have no need to login to a separate backend system to make content changes. It's all done on the public site with the Visual Editing System. And for security purposes, the site features different editing zones that allow different types of users – like editors, faculty and contributors – to access only the content that they are responsible for. It's easy and secure."
The Visual Editing System developed by DataGlyphics enables authorized editors to log in to the public Web site and switch to the live edit mode. Once in edit mode, users can add or edit content and then preview changes before publishing to the live site.
The re-designed site includes the popular MediaNews Weblog produced by Poynter's Jim Romenesko. Based in Chicago, Romenesko chronicles developments throughout the journalism world and posts them to Jim Romenesko's MediaNews on Poynter Online beginning at about 7:00 a.m. Eastern every day.
Poynter partnered with the American Society of Newspaper Editors to create an interactive Ethics Tool as part of the new site. The tool enables journalists to work through a ten-step process designed to provoke thoughtful consideration and discussion of the principles, options and consequences involved in journalistic ethical decision-making. Users may invite other registered users to review their cases and post comments. The Ethics Tool is designed for use with long-term investigative projects as well as deadline stories.
The new Poynter Online features an interactive calendar that provides concise delivery and display of the journalism events of more than 35 organizations. The calendar allows registered users from different organizations to log in, post and manage their events. The calendar also enables registered users to set reminders for events of their choice, and it provides event planners with a snapshot of possible scheduling conflicts for such events as training, conferences and conventions.
The re-design also includes a Headline of the Day feature that enables users to pick their favorite, special News Feeds from hundreds of sources aggregated by Moreover.com.
Mitchell said, "We aim Poynter Online mostly at working journalists, but we hope it serves as a valuable resource for students, teachers and consumers of news, too."
Everyone who registers with Poynter Online receives a Personal Page where they can post their bios, track news of special interest on their beats, share their favorite links with colleagues, schedule personal reminders about journalism events, and manage other customized services provided by Poynter Online. The Personal Page is designed as an ongoing virtual home base for journalists to use throughout their careers.
About Poynter The Poynter Institute is a school dedicated to teaching and inspiring journalists and media leaders. It promotes excellence and integrity in the practice of craft and in the practical leadership of successful businesses. It stands for a journalism that informs citizens and enlightens public discourse. The late Nelson Poynter, who died in 1978, founded the Institute in 1975 as a school to further his goals and values. As publisher of the St. Petersburg Times, he insisted on excellence, editorial integrity, and independent ownership. Poynter willed the controlling stock of the Times Publishing Company to the Institute to assure its continued independence after his death, and to commit the publishing company’s dividends to elevate the standards of journalism through training and research.
