Senator Ron Klein and Representative Connie Mack Announce Regional Bioscience Initiative
Industry-led Consortium to Support Development of Key Sector in South Florida Delray Beach, FL – March 11, 2003 –Senate Democratic Leader Ron Klein joined Deputy Majority Leader Connie Mack today to announce the formation of the South Florida Bioscience Consortium, a team of over 30 individuals from private industry, academia, economic development and government and who will work together in support of this fast-growing and important industry sector. The consortium’s mission is to ensure sufficient human and investment resources exist to encourage and support the commercialization of bioscience products and the development of the bioscience industry in South Florida.
Senator Klein and Representative Mack, who both serve on the board of the Florida Research Consortium, have been instrumental in moving Florida’s technology agenda forward. They led the development of the Florida Technology Development Act, established under Senate Bill 1844 during the 2002 legislative session, which provides for the establishment of university-based Centers of Excellence to give the State of Florida a clear position of leadership in key emerging technology segments.
“South Florida has a solid foundation of bioscience activity in both industry and academia, and this consortium will coordinate the important work being done throughout the region for positive economic impact,” said Senator Klein. “In light of other legislative initiatives, such as Senate President Jim King’s Biomedical Research Legislation, the time is right for South Florida to put forth a coordinated effort in this arena.”
“The formation of the South Florida Bioscience Consortium will help solidify South Florida’s place on the map for cutting edge scientific research and discovery and as a hub of high-tech, high-paying jobs,” said Representative Mack. “The bioscience industry is vital to the growth of our economy, and we must assure that it flourishes, prospers and has a home here in South Florida.”
This initiative, spearheaded by the Business Development Board of Palm Beach County, includes early on participation from Bioheart, BioFlorida, The Broward Alliance, The Broward Office of Economic Development, The Beacon Council, Enterprise Development Corporation of South Florida, Florida Atlantic University, Florida International University, Hyperion Medical Innovators, Nabi Biopharmaceuticals, Nova Southeastern University, University of Miami, Transdermal Technologies, and Viragen – a collection of economic development organizations, universities and corporations that spans the tri-county area.
Since the first meeting was held late last year, Akerman, Senterfitt, Bio Research Support, Edwards & Angell, GMP Companies, IVAX, Source Molecular Corporation, Sunol Molecular Corporation and others have also joined the consortium.
“Nabi Biopharmaceuticals is delighted to be part of this exciting effort to raise the visibility of bioscience in South Florida,” stated David Gury, Chairman of Nabi Biopharmaceuticals and Chairman of the Florida Research Consortium. “Nabi has chosen South Florida as its headquarters and is committed to the health of the bioscience sector in this region.”
The South Florida Bioscience Consortium will work closely with organizations such as BioFlorida whose mission is to promote biotechnology and related science in Florida. Mel Rothberg, Executive Vice President for Viragen who chairs BioFlorida’s Southeast Regional Committee will also chair the new consortium. Franklin Garcia-Godoy, Assistant Dean for Clinical Sciences at Nova Southeastern University will serve as co-chair.
“I am deeply committed to the success of the bioscience industry in our region, and am proud to lead these two initiatives,” stated Mel Rothberg. “For perhaps the first time, we’ve got a truly regional team in place to take this sector to the next level, and I’m looking forward to working with all of our partners for maximum economic development impact in our region.”
