Gold Standard Inc., a leading developer of drug information databases, software and clinical information solutions, has entered an agreement with SureScripts, LLC, the largest network provider of electronic prescribing services, to incorporate Gold Standard’s Alchemy’s drug product file and clinical hierarchy drug classification feature into the SureScripts Electronic Prescribing Network™.
Alchemy combines comprehensive drug data with an intuitive, flexible architecture that is fully compliant with NCPDP telecommunication and electronic prescribing standards. Under the agreement, Alchemy will support the SureScripts medication history service, which compiles prescription data from multiple community pharmacies to provide physicians with a view of a patient’s medication history. SureScripts will utilize Alchemy’s drug product file, where required, to filter information on sensitive medications, and Alchemy’s proprietary clinical hierarchy.
“The timely, accurate and comprehensive information within Alchemy’s drug product file, coupled with the ability to classify and organize drug product information with an unprecedented level of precision through the clinical hierarchy, will result in improved management of the data that flows across the SureScripts Electronic Prescribing Network,” said Marianne Messer, Gold Standard’s executive vice president of sales and corporate development.
Alchemy’s drug product file, which can be seamlessly integrated into any system or application and is updated daily, delivers the most flexible drug data available today, including U.S. brand and generic prescription drugs, OTC products, herbals, vitamins and nutritional products, medical devices and diagnostic kits. As a result, Alchemy resolves NDC challenges; tracks drug attribute changes; removes brand/generic obstacles; provides more comprehensive manufacturer data; and features more complete storage information.
In complement to Alchemy’s product data, the multi-tiered proprietary clinical hierarchy organizes products at a conceptual level through a combination of therapeutic classifications, then drug product groupings. It allows users to aggregate data into major classifications that more closely align with how the products are used in the market rather than just therapeutic classifications – an important distinction since there are instances where products have identical ingredients, strengths and dosage forms yet differ in their therapeutic intent, making differentiation at a theoretical level crucial for accurate data analysis.
“At the beginning of this year, SureScripts announced its intention to expand beyond the electronic transmission of new prescriptions and renewals by offering new information services that support its mission of improving the prescribing process,” said Rick Ratliff, chief operating officer for SureScripts. “Today’s announcement marks another key step in the successful rollout of one of those new services. This collaboration with Gold Standard will help SureScripts adapt its medication history service to meet the varying requirements of each state. It will also support the development of other new services designed to further aid clinical decision making at the point of care.”
Data from pharmacies gives physicians more detailed, clinical information on a patient’s current and past medications. For example, a patient’s pharmacy record includes a more consistent view of the instructions that accompany prescriptions (known as “SIG” information). Pharmacists also capture data related to allergies and the dates on which medications are dispensed. SureScripts combines pharmacy data with medication data from existing sources to provide physicians a more complete, timely and clinically sound view of a patient’s medication history.
Gold Standard will feature Alchemy in booth #2121, at the NACDS Pharmacy & Technology Conference Aug. 26-30 in San Diego, Calif.
